After the completion of the specialistic training, maxillofacial surgeons in Croatia can attend to fellowship in Plastic and reconstructive Head and Neck Surgery. In April 2010, members of our Society, joined with otorhinolaryngologists and head&neck oncologists established Croatian Head and Neck Society. One of the tasks of this society is to establish the fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery, opened for both maxillofacial surgeons and otorhinolaryngologists.

Notes:
After dentistry you need 2 years in practice to obtain general qualifications before you can start on the oral & maxillofacial specialty training which takes 5 years. All medical specialties have been described in detail in a systematic way by the national health board in 2009-2010
Qualifications awarded:
Specialtandlæge I Tand-Mund- Kæbekirurgi, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon
Notes 1:
At this point a single qualification in dentistry, plus 2 years working within dentistry + 5 years specialty training in hospital in oral & maxillofacial surgery is the only pass way accepted. It is not possible to obtain a medical degree on top of dentistry due to the rules that you cannot get 2 long educations! Many of the oral & maxillofacial surgeons want to have the possibility to obtain a double degree
Notes 2:
"There is a general rule which prevent 2 long educations. The EU should help DK to get exceptions for this on an individual basis. The general trend in EU and the need for free moval of work force in Europe as well as a general acceptance of double education would probably facilitate the development towards possibility of double qualification in DK.

Only at Helsinki University double diploma has been advocated to qualify for CMFS training. The preclinical studies forts and doctors are the same at Helsinki University and Oulu University. At Turku University the preclinical studies are different for dental students and medical students, and the training time for double diploma in Turku is thus 11 years, of which Dentistry is 5 years and Medicine 6 years. In Helsinki and Oulu only 3.5 years of additional medical studies are required for double diploma
Notes 1:
Should double diploma should be required or Not? How long for training period? It is a big issue for the moment if double diploma should be required or Not. Helsinki University is the only university which advocates double diploma for a Specialist degree in Oral and Macillofacial Surgery.

Dental (years): 5
Total years training: 10
Notes:
If you are a dentist the medical training is 1 year shorterIf you finished medicine, in Amsterdam and Groningen dental training is 2 years shorter
In all, about 10 years of training
A special program in Nijmegen offers a shorter possibility, i.e.. if you start with medicine, you can study dentistry for 2 full-time years. In the 3th year of your dentistry training program, you are allowed to start with the OMF-training. This program is called TOVA (Tandheelkundige opleidig voor Artsen –Dentistry for Medical Doctors): Total of 8 years training.
Notes 1:
Based upon the The Bologna Declaration on the European space for higher education, the Dutch government has reduced the amount of students that follow a second university or academic study as undergraduate student after finishing an academic study with a diploma. Dutch government will only provide one Bachelors and one Masters degree. Costs related to a second Bachelors or Masters degree must be paid by the individual candidate him- or herself. Consequently there is still a debate in the Ministry of Health about the regulations concerning the mandatory dual degree training program of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Further, there is also debate in the Ministry of Health about the position of the Dutch dual degreed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in the European Community. In the Netherlands, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a Dental Specialty, but on a European level it should be a Medical Specialty because of the regulations in the European Community (dual degree means a medical doctor with an additional degree, i.e. dentistry). In summary: still the same problems as in the last years.
Notes 2:
In the Netherlands, we do have 8 university trainingcenters. AMSTERDAM VU MEDISCH CENTRUM (VUMC), AMSTERDAM ACADEMISCH MEDISCH CENTRUM (AMC), GRONINGEN — UNIVERSITAIR MEDISCH CENTRUM GRONINGEN (UMCG), LEIDEN — LEIDS UNIVERSITAIR MEDISCH CENTRUM (LUMC), MAASTRICHT — ACADEMISCH ZIEKENHUIS MAASTRICHT (AZM), NIJMEGEN — UMC ST RADBOUD, ROTTERDAM — ERASMUS MC, UTRECHT — UNIVERSITAIR MEDISCH CENTRUM UTRECHT (UMC UTRECHT) All of them do cooperate with one non-academic trainee center.

Recently the association also introduced the application of the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPA’s), a framework for teaching and assessing competencies which is intended to start 1-1-2020 . There is no Dutch exit-examination, however the European Board examination is highly recommended.
